Effective treatment for a variety of conditions
Since its introduction, the Gamma Knife has
been used worldwide to successfully treat patients with a wide range of brain abnormalities. Specifically, the
Gamma Knife may be the treatment option of choice for many who have the following indications:
Benign Tumors Acoustic neuromas Meningiomas Pituitary
tumors Hemangioblastomas, chordomas and pineal tumors | Malignant Tumors Metastases Glial tumors Ocular melanomas |
Functional Disorders Intractable pain Trigeminal neuralgia Parkinson's
disease Epilepsy | Vascular
Disorders Arteriovenous malformations Cavernous
malformations |
An extraordinary and extraordinarily simple
procedure.
At first, patients are given a short
series of advanced
diagnostic procedures, which determine the precise location of the target within the brain. These
tests may include x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, computed
tomography (CT) scans or angiograms. Once completed, the radiological
images enable the treatment team to formulate the best radiation dosage and
treatment time.
Immediately prior to treatment, patients are moved to the room that houses
the Gamma Knife unit. The radiation delivery is painless and usually lasts
from 30 to 60 minutes. During that entire period, patients remain in constant
voice and visual contact with the treatment team. Again, no general anesthesia
is necessary.
After treatment, patients are returned to their room and will probably spend
the night for observation. In most cases, patients can return to normal
activities within 24-48 hours of the Gamma Knife procedure.
A procedure that's safe and effective.
Patients can take great comfort when they arrive at Wyoming
Valley Gamma Knife Center. That's because Gamma Knife surgery boasts a long history of
safety as well as effectiveness. More than 25 years of research and
clinical use attest to the Gamma Knife's success. Worldwide, more than 400,000 children
and adults have experienced significant medical benefits from it. Meanwhile,
the risks of traditional brain surgery – such as hemorrhage, infection and
stroke – are avoided. You should also know the Wyoming Valley Gamma
Knife Center is certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the
Gamma Knife is FDA-approved and meets all safety requirements of the U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
